National para athletics champion, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly has continued to prove his excellence by clinching the gold medal in the T20 long jump event (intellectual impairment category) at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi on Sunday (28 September) .
Even more impressively, the Perlis-born athlete made history by leaping a distance of 7.67 meters, breaking his own world record of 7.64 meters set at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta.
Abdul Latif also erased the championship record held by Dutch athlete Ranki Oberoi (7.39m, Dubai 2019) with his very first jump of 7.61m, before soaring even further on his third attempt.
“I’m very satisfied with today’s performance because I managed to break two records, the championship record and the world record, here in New Delhi,” he said after the competition.
“I dedicate this victory to my wife and child. Balancing training with time for family and a baby on the way is not easy, but discipline is the key,” he added.
The silver medal in the event went to Hassan Dawshi of Saudi Arabia with a jump of 7.36m, while Matvei Iakushev of Russia took bronze with 7.22m.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh described Abdul Latif’s achievement as a testament to the extraordinary perseverance and discipline of the national para athletes.
