Remember the news about the petrol subsidy that was announced in Budget 2019? Well, the government has finally announced that those who are qualified for this subsidy are recipients of Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH).
According to The Star, this new petrol subsidy scheme will see the price of RON95 petrol being floated once again starting from January 1st, 2020. Currently, the price of RON95 petrol will remain at RM2.08 per litre until the end of 2019.
Meanwhile, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the new subsidy scheme will benefit 2.8 million people and cost the government RM6.54 mil every month. Eligible recipients will receive the subsidy every four months. For motorcycle owners, they will receive RM48 while car owners will receive RM120, which is equivalent to RM12 a month for motorcycle owners and RM30 a month for car owners.
Currently, those who are eligible for this subsidy scheme are recipients of BSH, and it will only be given to those in Peninsular Malaysia. For car owners, their vehicles must have 1,600cc engines and below or vehicles over 10 years old with engines larger than 1,600cc to be eligible. As for motorcycles, this subsidy will be given to owners with vehicles that have engines of 1,50cc and below, or seven-year-old bikes or more above 150cc.
The government confirms that citizens in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will not have this petrol subsidy scheme but the price of RON95 will remain capped at RM2.08. Saifuddin added that this scheme is expected to start in 2020 and the money will be credited directly to the eligible recipients every four months.
