An 11-year-old boy’s decision to drive a car with his younger sibling and cousin ended in an accident when the vehicle skidded into a drain along Jalan Telok Gong in Selangor.

In the incident that occurred around 10 am, the grey Proton Saga was believed to have been driven by the boy himself for about two kilometres before he lost control.

South Klang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ramli Kasa, said the incident went viral on social media after the vehicle was found in the drain.

“Acting on the information, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the South Klang District Police Headquarters (IPD) managed to trace the vehicle, its owner, and the three children believed to have been in the car during the incident.”

“The children consisted of two siblings who hold United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards and their cousin, who is a local citizen,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

According to him, initial investigations revealed that the vehicle was originally driven by the mother of the two siblings from Bandar Sultan Suleiman, North Port Klang, to her sister’s house in Telok Gong.

“Upon arriving at her sister’s house, the woman, who also holds a UNHCR card, left the vehicle briefly to use the toilet. Her 11-year-old son took the opportunity to grab the car keys and invited his seven-year-old sibling and their cousin to go to a shop,” he said.

He added that as they approached the shop area, the boy lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid into a roadside drain.

“No injuries were reported among the three children, but the car sustained minor damage to the lower right front bonnet.”

“Investigations into the incident are being conducted under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, Section 39(1) of the same act, and the case is also being investigated under the Child Act 2001 to identify any elements of neglect involving the children,” he said.

Ramli reminded parents and guardians to be more vigilant and monitor their children’s movements to prevent them from driving or riding any vehicle that could pose safety risks.

Stay tuned for more updates.
