The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) was involved in a high-speed pursuit of a Proton Wira in Johor earlier today (7 May) after the driver and passenger went rogue and refused to follow the police’s instruction to pull over.

In a statement, the South Johor Bahru District Police revealed that at around 1.40am today, a PDRM mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) detected a suspicious blue Proton Wira on the Pasir Gudang expressway.

It was further revealed that the car was driven by a couple of lovers, a 36-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, both Malaysians. They were driving against traffic towards Perling and refused to comply with the police’s instruction to pull over.

The Proton Wira then accelerated before driving in a ‘zig-zag’ manner and entering the PLUS expressway. Afterwards, the couple made a U-turn onto the Pasir Gudang expressway before entering the EDL expressway towards the city centre.

They then headed towards Persiaran South Key and Jalan Bakar Batu towards Pandan, before fleeing onto Pasir Gudang expressway again towards the Pasir Gudang Industrial Zone and entering Jalan Masai Lama towards Tanjung Langsat.

The police MPVs in pursuit of the vehicle finally managed to stop the couple at Jalan Persiaran Tanjung Langsat, off Jalan Nibong.

A total of 14 MPVs were involved in the chase

PDRM revealed that the high-speed chase was over 96km in distance and lasted 1 hour and 22 minutes.

South Johor Bahru District Police Chief ACP Raub Selamat was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying that a total of 14 MPVs from the South Johor Bahru Police Headquarters, North Johor Bahru Police Headquarters and Seri Alam Police Headquarters were involved in the pursuit.

The couple tested positive for illegal substances and had 0.45g of methamphetamine

Moreover, the South Johor Bahru District Police revealed that the driver didn’t have a valid driving license, while the road tax and insurance of the Proton Wira had expired.

Both suspects were arrested and remanded for 4 days for investigations under:

  • Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions
  • Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving
  • Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for not having a valid driving license
  • Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for expired road tax
  • Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administration of dangerous drugs
  • Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possessing dangerous drugs
