An engagement ceremony held in violation of the lockdown resulted in 16 members of a family testing positive for Covid-19 including one death.
The incident happened on 10 May in Hyderabad, Telangana, India where the couple held the ceremony at their house in the Puranapul area. The next day, the bride’s grandfather, who is a heart patient, died and tested positive for Covid-19, reported India TV.
The 57-year-old man’s death alerted the family members to get tested and was sent by the Health Department and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for screening.
40 people who attended the ceremony were screened and 15 tested positive out of which eight are children. The infected family members are now undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital.
Further investigations by the health authorities discovered that the deceased had contracted the virus from his son, a bank employee who got the infection from his friend. In fact, the bride herself wasn’t feeling well on the day of the ceremony, reported Times Now News.
It is reported that the old man, his three sons and their children all stay in one building.
Following a tip-off, the police had booked a case against the family under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant.
Under the lockdown rules in the area, only 20 people are allowed to attend a marriage ceremony. Violations of this lockdown have already resulted in the spread of Covid-19 in few areas in Hyderabad and outskirts.
As of now, Telangana reports 1,597 confirmed cases, zero recoveries and 35 deaths.
