Two editors from Sin Chew Daily have been suspended from their duties following the Jalur Gemilang error, in which the crescent was absent from the image.

The executive editor-in-chief and the deputy chief sub-editor have been subject to immediate disciplinary action until an internal investigation is completed.

“This decision is effective immediately and will remain in effect until the completion of the investigation,” Sin Chew Daily said in a brief statement on its website.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said police had arrested both editors and had completed recording statements from both of them to assist in investigations into the publication of an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang on the newspaper’s front page.

As of yesterday (April 17), Razarudin said police have received 40 reports nationwide regarding the issue.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.

In another report by BERNAMA, PDRM also confirmed that both editors from the publication were released last night at 8:20 PM. The statement recording took about three hours.

Following the major backlash on the Jalur Gemilang error, the newspaper issued an apology, stating that the mistake was a technical error and unintentional. His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, also dubbed the mistake “unacceptable,” while the UMNO Youth Chief called for stricter action for the mistake.
