Two unfortunate vendors in Tampin, Negeri Sembilan, claimed to have received two fake RM100 banknotes in less than an hour.

Hasbullah Mohd. Saleh, 47, claimed that his wife received the counterfeit money from a nearby Apam Balik trader. The wife only realised that the banknote was fake when she wanted to pay for a cake and flowers for their eldest son’s birthday recently.

She was told by the cake shop owner that the RM100 banknote was a fake due to its smaller size and its fading condition after being exposed to water.

In another isolated incident on the same day, a 21-year-old beverage vendor also claimed to have received a counterfeit RM100 banknote, and after checking the CCTV footage, she suspected it belonged to a male customer who came in a Perodua Myvi. The vendor said that the banknote was received by a part-timer, who did not check the money and run it through the scanner.

Two police reports were lodged, and the CCTV footage was also handed to the police as evidence, according to Kosmo.

Tampin District Police Chief, Superintendent Amiruddien Sariman, confirmed the incident and said that the first report was made by a bank, where an employee of a premises selling beverages allegedly deposited the money at the bank in Tampin. The bank detected the counterfeit banknote when using the money counting machine.

“The second report was made by the owner of the food stall who deals with various customers and only realised that the RM100 he received was believed to be fake after finishing his business,” Amiruddien said, reported Berita Harian.

He added that initial investigations found that the suspects were believed to be two different individuals, and the investigation was being conducted under Section 489B of the Penal Code for using forged money.
