A 21-year-old Malaysian mother was sentenced to 6 months in jail after she was arrested in July 2025 by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for engaging in prostitution.
However, now that she has been selected for the Ihsan MADANI Licensed Prisoner Release (PBSL) programme, she is revealing why she resorted to prostitution in the first place.
21-year-old Malaysian single mother shares why she previously resorted to prostitution
According to a report by Kosmo!, the woman, who is a single mother of a 4-year-old child from Padang Besar, Perlis, explained that she felt jealous of watching others, who were dabbling in prostitution, live luxurious lifestyles.
She shared,
“I used to work in a restaurant, but because I wanted to live a luxurious life like my peers, I became willing to join them in doing immoral activities. Being imprisoned was enough; I want to start a new life.”
“I am repentant and regretful for being willing to do those activities solely for money. I became excited when I saw my friends living luxuriously and spending freely because of doing those things, to the point where they are willing to turn their backs on religion,”

Though after serving 4 months of her prison sentence, where she studied religion and made efforts to strengthen her connection with her faith, as well as being separated from her child, she believes she can make improvements to her life.
“My other friends are free; I was the only one who was arrested. This is my retribution, and maybe God loves me and wants to return me to the right path as soon as possible. I hope that after this release period ends, I can find a job and take good care of my child,” she added.
The Ihsan MADANI PBSL programme
The woman was among the 39 people released under the Ihsan MADANI PBSL programme at the Pokok Sena Prison in Kedah, in conjunction with the Deepavali celebrations, which was officiated by Kedah Prison Director, Deputy Prison Commissioner (TKP) Charin Promwichit.
According to the Malaysian Prison Department, this programme aims to provide opportunities to eligible prisoners to return to their families and communities, in an effort to support their recovery and social integration, based on criteria and qualifications. This is also an initiative under Community Rehabilitation to reduce the rate of inmates in prisons.
