Oh dear, this is such a tragic incident to happen to such a young life! Recently, netizens were in an uproar after news of a 22-year-old girl jumping off the Penang Bridge circulated last night (Sept 19).
The incident reportedly happened at around 7.30pm at KM2.8 of the Penang Bridge heading north. The girl, who was identified as Xu Jiaying from Bukit Mertajam, had finished work and was supposedly on her way home from her job at a Penang coffee shop, China Press reported.
Witnesses said that she had driven to that particular area on the bridge in a silver car and stopped for a while before driving to the spot of her death scene. She walked to the edge and sat there before making a phone call. After the call, she reportedly placed her phone on the side of the bridge, climbed up the sides and jumped down into the turbulent waters below. OMG!
Apparently, reports said that the last call was made to her boyfriend, 27-year-old Wang Lihong and they allegedly had an argument before that call. It is believed that she had told him that she wanted to go drinking with friends but he did not allow her to do so and threatened to tell her mother as well.
A man who saw her said that she was crying while she was walking on the bridge and asked her if she wanted to commit suicide. However, she didn’t answer him and continued crying, saying that she had no friends, Oriental Daily said. The police and emergency services were notified while the girl’s mother and boyfriend rushed to the scene as they were worried about her.
As of last night, the authorities could not find any news of Xu, whether she was dead or alive, and her family was still waiting anxiously while praying that she would be safe. However, just this morning (Sept 20) at around 10am, Kwongwah reported that some fishermen found Xu’s body, dressed in a black T-shirt and blue pants. Her remains were sent to the hospital for a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, her boyfriend said that he did not understand why she had committed suicide as they had not broken up. In fact, he said that their relationship was stable and the coffee shop that she was working at belongs to his family as well.
According to Kwongwah, he said they had even planned a trip together to Bangkok in October. He said that he had indeed received a phone call from Xu at 7.30pm the day before but as the signal was not good, he could not hear anything.
Xu’s distraught family members said that she was a quiet girl and were on good terms with each other. They were not aware of any financial problems she was having and were very puzzled as to why she would commit suicide. The cause of her suicide is still unclear at the moment.
