A 24-year-old woman from China was caught running a scheme to save up 10 million yuan (RM5 million) in hopes of achieving her lifelong dream of living a lavish lifestyle.

To make that dream a reality, she targeted wealthy men by dating them, moving into their homes, and eventually stealing from them, according to the South China Morning Post.

“My parents could not give me the life I wanted”

In March 2021, Yin started working at a karaoke bar in Shanghai, where she joined local social and dating chat groups, even going as far as reinventing herself as a socialite to attract wealthy men.

She followed a strict fitness routine, poured most of her savings into plastic surgery, and even took classes in fine dining, wine tasting, and etiquette to refine her image.

Her obsession with luxury reportedly stemmed from her humble upbringing, and her desire intensified after attending the lavish wedding of one of her boyfriend’s friends.

Realising that was the life she longed for, she set a goal to save 10 million yuan within five years, buy a home in Shenzhen, and reunite her family under one roof.

“My parents could not give me the life I wanted, so I built it for myself,” she said.

Yin made off with over RM118,000 from 8 men

Yin specifically targeted wealthy men on social media, dated them, and eventually moved into their luxurious villas in Shanghai. While they were away, she hired movers to empty out their homes, taking everything from designer belts to sofas and appliances, then sold the stolen items on second-hand platforms.

In just a few months, Yin reportedly made off with over 200,000 yuan (RM118,000) from eight unsuspecting men. Most of her victims chose to remain silent, afraid of the public shame that might follow.

Despite her crimes, Yin lived a surprisingly frugal life, spending less than 30 yuan (RM17) a day, relying on free makeup samples, and renting a small basement room in a Shanghai hotel.

“I only wanted money to buy a house. I wasn’t spending recklessly,” she told the police.

Yin’s scheme was eventually exposed when her ninth boyfriend, Zhang, installed security cameras in his home and caught her in the act. He later reported her to the police.

She was arrested in February 2022 on charges of theft and fraud and subsequently prosecuted, though her exact sentence was not made public.
