When a workplace turns toxic, it can take a serious toll on our mental and emotional health. In the worst-case scenarios, it may even lead to loss of life, as tragically happened to a 25-year-old woman in Japan.

The woman, Satomi, died by suicide after falling into depression, reportedly triggered by her employer likening her to a “stray dog.”

Earlier this year, Satomi’s bereaved family held a press conference to make the incident public. According to the family’s lawyer, Satomi joined the company in April 2021. In December of the same year, she was summoned by the company president and criticised for her general work attitude during a 50-minute meeting.

The president allegedly made remarks attacking her personality, including: “Don’t mess with us adults,” and “You’re what they call a stray dog.” On another occasion, he reportedly told her, “Barking dogs seldom bite, you know.”

Satomi developed depression in January 2022 and took a leave of absence. She attempted suicide in August 2022 while recuperating at home and passed away about a year later.

The family filed a lawsuit and won

During the press conference, Satomi’s older sister, Yuko, said, “Satomi was a cheerful person who always prioritised others over herself. I hope things like this never happen again.”

The family filed a lawsuit seeking damages from the company, D-up. However, the company reportedly argued that “there were issues with Satomi’s work attitude” and denied that power harassment had occurred, according to NHK World Japan.

The Tokyo District Court ruled that the company must pay the family ¥150 million in compensation — approximately RM4.275 million.
