According to its Deputy Director (Operations) Datuk Izhar Abu Talib, “The involvement of civil servants with illegal substances should be a cause of concern and should be handled immediately.”

“Most of those who are involved were found positive taking methamphetamine for its affordable price and its ability to provide ample energy for work.”

“Most who are involved come from the support staff group such as drivers.”

In an effort to reduce the involvement of civil servants with substance abuse, TEKAD or Tempat Kerja Bebas Dadah was created to help with rehabilitation efforts.

NADA also suggested that employers should create their own task force in helping to eradicate this problem at the workplace.

Izhar noted that the main cause of substance abuse was rooted in stress at the workplace.

The long hours, irregular shifts, non-conducive workplace, chasing of deadlines and strict management policy were among the reasons cited as a cause for substance abuse.

He added, “Among the symptoms of those involved with drug abuse is: Facing inconsistency in terms of output, being negligent, facing financial woes, becoming a social recluse and is unable to maintain their appearance.”

“Individuals who are involved with substance abuse should not be shunned but rather be given a second chance, by inviting them to join in intervention programs organised by both the government and the private sector.”

It is time that we provide support to those who need it the most, for everyone is fighting their own battles. Do not let them suffer in silence.
