Our country officially reopened its borders the world on Friday (1 April 2022) and it’s been a day to remember for many Malaysians. It is an especially joyous day for Malaysians residing or working in Singapore as a special arrangement between both countries has allowed for ease of land travel between the two nations, allowing them to come back home without much hassle.

During the first day of borders reopening, many Singaporeans also took the opportunity to cross the Causeway link and explore Malaysia again by land. In fact, as reported by national news agency Bernama, a total of 33,700 travellers cleared the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints as of 5pm on Friday.

The number is according to Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), whereby 6,100 people entered Singapore, which include:

  • 3,500 by bus
  • 1,600 by car
  • 1,000 by motorcycle

Meanwhile, another 27,600 departed to Malaysia, which include:

  • 9,700 by car
  • 9,400 by bus
  • 8,500 by motorcycle

Previously, ICA also said on its website that over 11,000 travellers cleared both land checkpoints as of 7 am on 1 April. Overall, the process was smooth and no incident was reported during the first day of border reopening.

On 24 March 2022, Malaysia and Singapore announced that they have agreed to reopen their land borders for fully vaccinated travellers beginning 1 April. Travellers do not need to take Covid-19 pre-departure and arrival tests or be quarantined in order to travel between both countries.
