The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) revealed that a woman in Sibu, Sarawak recently lost RM45,049 to an online job scam. The 34-year-old victim, who is a company employee claimed that she spotted the job advertisement on Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday (8 March 2023).

According to BERNAMA, the victim then responded to the advertisement by calling the number attached to it. She was then asked to register her personal and banking details at a given website. The victim was further instructed to make payments amounting to RM45,049 to seven bank accounts to get the commission for goods ordered under her name.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement yesterday urged the public to not be easily deceived by advertisements on social media that offer lucrative returns. He further advised the public to first check the company or agency involved at the nearest police station before proceeding.

Moreover, the public can also check the legitimacy of a company or agency by going to the official PDRM website here. Besides that, Malaysians can also call CCID Infoline at 013-2111222, CCID Response Centre at 03-26101559/03-26101599 or the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997.

Let us all be vigilant while browsing online and always make sure to properly research any offers before proceeding. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then most of the time, it is!
