A top Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) scorer recently made headlines after being denied a spot in a Bachelor’s in Accounting, despite his results, and was instead placed in a Management course.

In another case, a female top scorer from Melaka shared that her application for studying law was rejected and ended up being offered accounting instead, which was her fourth choice.

She was rejected by the 3 universities

Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) president Wee Ka Siong shared on Facebook about his meeting with 19-year-old Lee, a matriculation graduate who scored a perfect CGPA of 4.0, full marks in co-curricular activities, and a 100% merit score.

Lee has dreamed of becoming a lawyer since she was little. Through UPU, she applied to the only three public universities where local Chinese students can study law.

“Lee isn’t just any student, by every measure, she’s among the best. She’s represented her school at state-level storytelling, public speaking, and poetry recitation competitions, bringing home medals. She’s confident, unafraid of the stage, and walked into those university interviews believing she had a real shot,” Wee said.

But despite her stellar record, Lee was rejected by all three universities. Instead, she was offered a spot in Accounting.

“I’ve been offered Accounting, which was my fourth choice, and UPU doesn’t allow me to appeal. What else can I do? Becoming a lawyer has been my dream since childhood. I gave everything. I got perfect scores. I handled the interviews well. I truly believed I had a chance. But now it feels like my dream is gone. Why wasn’t I chosen? Were all those who got in also perfect scorers? If not, how is this fair?” Lee asked.

“Maybe I just have to accept my fate”

Wee later questioned what kind of message is being sent to the younger generation when even a perfect scorer is denied the chance to pursue her dream.

“My family isn’t well-off and I have younger siblings. Going to a private university is out of the question because I don’t want to burden my parents. Maybe I just have to accept my fate, give up on Law, and settle for Accounting. But this will always be the biggest regret of my life,” Lee said.

Wee stressed that education in Malaysia needs to be a level playing field, adding that if the system is broken, then it must be fixed.

“Lee scored perfect results, yet not only was she denied her first choice in Law, she was also barred from appealing because the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) had already placed her in her fourth choice, Accounting. At this point, she can only hope for a miracle. I wish her nothing but the best ahead,” Wee concluded.
