The whole world has received ample warnings about what can and cannot be done while the Covid-19 virus is still active around us. Yet, many choose to disregard the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the government and authorities to ensure their people’s safety.

One of the rules for avoiding the Covid-19 virus is that people should practice social distancing and avoid gatherings, but one pair of parents chose not to adhere to the SOP which cost them the life of their newborn baby.

As according to Tribunnews, the poor newborn baby died at 40-days-old in Pamekasan, Indonesia, after it had contracted the coronavirus. It was reported that the baby had been born healthy, but due to the negligence of the baby’s parents, the baby’s health began deteriorating.

The poor baby’s parents had apparently allowed neighbours to visit and hold the baby after they had returned home from the hospital when the baby was born. A few weeks later, the baby was ridden with a fever, coughs and shortness of breath.

Medical practitioners identified the cause of the baby’s struggles as the Covid-19 virus and believe that the baby contracted the virus at 28 days old.

Both parents tested negative for the virus, which led medical teams to believe that the baby contracted the virus from one of the neighbours that held the baby.

According to Mayo Clinic, infants below the age of one are at a higher risk of severe illness with the Covid-19 virus as their immune systems are still immature and their airways are smaller, making them more likely to develop breathing issues with respiratory virus infections.

Hence, parents should protect their babies and infants by ensuring that their babies are kept far away from others, at least while the coronavirus is still actively circulating in the community.
