Do you miss going to the beach? Or just relaxing on an island? Well, this is good news for you! Individuals who have completed two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be allowed to go to Langkawi after the resort island is expected to open to visitors this September.

Kedah Menteri Besar, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, as reported by Berita Harian, said that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) have agreed to supply sufficient vaccines to ensure that 80 per cent of the island’s population received vaccinations before the arrival of tourists. He explained,

“MOSTI and MOTAC have agreed to set up a special committee to expedite the vaccination of 61,000 Langkawi residents who are eligible to receive the vaccine. This means that 120,000 doses of vaccine must be supplied to the people of Langkawi before it is opened to the public. Tourists who want to enter Langkawi need to complete two doses of vaccine and those who are not vaccinated or have only receive one dose, are not allowed to enter Langkawi.”

Muhammad Sanusi said he was confident that the opening of Langkawi in the next two months would restore the tourism sector on the island. He mentioned that the tourism industry on the island has been severely impacted by the pandemic. Hence, the vaccination process needs to be sped up.
