Drunk driving has claimed yet more lives in Malaysia, but worse still, this latest fatal accident reported by the New Straits Times newspaper occurred right on the heels of a previous fatal drunk driving incident that happened only 72 hours earlier on Sunday (9th February 2020), which also involved a motorbike-car collision.
The accident, which happened at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR), involves two youths on their motorbike and a female driver, who rear-ended them from behind with her car. It is believed that she was driving under the influence at the time of the accident, while on her way home from a night out at a karaoke centre.
Upon impact, both youths on the motorbike, Muhamad Syaiful Hilmi Rosidi, 21, and his pillion rider, Muhammad Amin Najmi Azaman, 19, were flung onto the highway at speed and were declared dead at the scene from the severity of their injuries. Both youths were said to have came from the same village.
The driver of the car has been identified as a 47-year-old health product salesperson, and will be remanded to facilitate further investigations, according to Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor. The remains of both young men will be sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for post-mortem autopsies.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims, and hope that the drunk driver will be held accountable for her actions!
