Five men were arrested after firecrackers were set off during the funeral procession of a gang member in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (16 March), reported Harian Metro.

A video of the incident circulated on social media, after which the police received two reports regarding the video.

According to Brickfields District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar, the first report was made by a senior police officer who saw the 36-second video of the funeral procession, showing a hearse passing through different parts of the city.

The second report was also made by a senior police officer, who saw a 58-second video of the vehicle with a gang symbol.

A third video shows a man setting off firecrackers in the middle of Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

Anuar added that upon receiving the reports, a police team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Brickfields District Police Headquarters (IPD) arrested five men aged 18 to 26 at five separate locations between 9pm and 2.30am.

He said that during the raid, the police also seized four vehicles – a Toyota Vellfire, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic and a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle – along with a flower wreath arranged to show the numbers 36, which is believed to be in reference to Geng 36.

One of the suspects had a criminal record while the other did not have any, Anuar said.

“The investigation found that the funeral procession involved a 28-year-old man who died due to a road accident at 7am on 14 March.”

“The suspect and the deceased had been friends since childhood and the deceased had ordered to set off firecrackers if he died.”

Anuar advised the public not to engage in activities that violate the country’s legal system or join any unrecognised organisation.

Meanwhile, the case is being investigated under Section 52 (3) of the Societies Act 1966, Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, Section 269 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
