While travelling is fun, sometimes it can get pretty expensive!

If you’re planning on travelling but afraid of bursting your budget, then you MUST school yourself with some of these super important travel hacks that will save you from burning a hole in your wallet.

With that, we’ve asked some frequent flyers to share some of their money-saving hacks when travelling abroad and based on the many suggestions that we have received, we listed down FIVE pivotal hacks for you, especially if you’re on a budget.

1. Checking for public holidays before you book tickets

Many might think booking on a public holiday is super expensive but that’s not always the case! Unless you do it last minute lah!

Travelling during public holidays is a great money-saving tip as you don’t have to apply for too many paid (or unpaid) leave days.

Pro-tip: Book the tickets a few days prior and fly back on a public holiday instead of flying out on said public holiday (it’s usually not as expensive since it’s not a public holiday for that country).

2. The best time to book your tickets is 3 to 3.5 months in advance and on a Sunday

study by CheapAir found that flight ticket prices are usually lower during that time. Also, debunking a popular myth, studies revealed that Tuesdays aren’t actually the best days to book your flight tickets. Instead, Sundays are.

Pro tip: Thursdays and Fridays are cheaper days to fly out too. A joint report by Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) obtained this data after combing through one year’s worth of flight data to identify the best times to fly and book your ticket.

3. Opt for CouchSurfing instead of hotels

If you’re a traveller on a budget then Couchsurfing is the best way to make sure you have a place to sleep for FREE. Yep, you read it right the first time! Of course, you can return the kind favour by cooking your host a meal or buying them dinner.

Besides having a place to crash for free, here’s why it’s awesome:

  • You get firsthand experience of how locals live in the country you’re visiting
  • Hosts themselves love to travel hence you’ll exchange a lot of travel stories/tips when staying with them
  • Most of the hosts are open to being your guide around their own town/city
  • They have frequent activities with Couchsurfers in the area

Plus, the website/app is easy to use! You just have to put in the location you’re travelling to and then reach out to a host! Stay safe though and always share your host’s location/deets with your close friends/family.

4. Check the overseas money changer’s rate

Before travelling, naturally, we’d go to the money changer with the best rates to exchange currencies. However, has it ever occurred to you that the money changers in other countries may, in fact, offer better rates?!

For example, the money changer in Bangkok known as Superrich almost always offers better rates.

Superrich in Bangkok: RM100 = 784 baht
Max Money in KL: RM100 = 774 baht

Eh, that’s one delicious meat skewer lost right there!
