An elderly man in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, is facing charges in court after he shot his neighbour’s cat to death with an air rifle.
According to a report by Astro Awani, the 62-year-old man pleaded not guilty as soon as the charges were read out to him by an interpreter in front of Judge Darmafikri Abu Adam.
Based on the charges, the accused shot the cat with an air gun, causing immense pain and suffering to the animal at a house in Bukit Rambai at 2:30pm on June 18, 2022.
With that, he was charged in accordance with Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 3 years or a fine between RM20,000 and RM100,000 or both. For this, a bail of RM5,000 with one surety was set for the case to be mentioned again on January 11.
On top of that, he also pleaded not guilty to another separate charge of possessing an air rifle without a valid license, before Magistrate Nabilah Nizam.
This charge is made according to Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960, in which if found guilty, he can be imprisoned for up to 7 years or a fine of not exceeding RM10,000 or both. He has been allowed a bail of RM2,500.
