The Selangor State Veterinary Services Department (JPV Selangor) recorded that 76,000 out of 250,000 pigs in 56 pig farms are believed to be infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) since the end of January.

According to a report by Harian Metro, JPV Selangor Director, Dr Hussuzana Khalil, shared that the spread of the epidemic could be happening rapidly due to the close distance between the farms, between 0.5 to 1km.

To curb the spread of ASF, especially to ensure it doesn’t spread to other states, JPV Selangor is taking several steps in accordance with the Animal Act 1953.

“Orders were issued in accordance with Section 19 of the Animal Act 1953, to pig farm owners, whereby JPV Selangor identified pigs from farms that were confirmed or believed to be infected with ASF. Pig farm owners must dispose of all pigs on the farms concerned within 7 days,”

“As of 2pm today (Tuesday, February 25), a total of 14 orders in accordance with Section 19 of the Animal Act 1953 have been issued to 14 pig farm owners,” she said.

At the same time, she revealed that approximately 1,200 pigs have been disposed of based on Malaysian Veterinary Standard Procedures (APTVM).

“Apart from being disposed of by euthanasia using CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas, 50 of them may die on their own due to infection and they will be buried in the plantation areas,” she explained.

JPV Selangor has also taken drastic measures to control the movement of pigs and pig carcasses between districts, and in and out of the state.
