It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas~
Christmas and the year-end holidays are just around the corner and we can’t wait!!! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all.
While ang mohs celebrate Christmas by donning their homes with lights and stockings, making snow angels, and more, we Malaysians have slightly different traditions compared to them, and that’s what makes us so unique! Here are some uniquely Malaysian Christmas traditions you’ll definitely know:
Pssst, there’s a discount code you can use for your Christmas shopping at the end of this article too! So make sure you scroll down!
1. Giving out ang paos as “gifts”

Christmas is a time of giving, hence the exchanging of gifts. However, we Malaysians like to keep things “practical”. That’s why we give out ang paos instead so that the receiver of the gift can buy himself whatever he wants. How thoughtful is that?
2. Spraying foam at cars and each other on the streets of KL

If you’ve ever been to the city centre around Christmas time or new year’s eve, you’d know that spraying foam is, for some reason, a tradition we do every year. We don’t know why, but it’s fun!
3. “Winter” inside malls

Looking for a white Christmas? Not a problem! Hang out in our Klang Valley malls and you’re bound to experience “snowfall”. Yes, it’s just foam and bubbles falling from the top, but it still looks and feels pretty magical.
4. Playing with fireworks

In Malaysia, it isn’t a celebration unless fireworks are involved.
5. Bringing curry chicken and fried mee to Christmas potlucks instead of turkey

Who needs turkey when we have our delicious Malaysian dishes?
6. Or having a Christmas steamboat dinner

Who doesn’t love a good, hearty steamboat meal? It’s the best way to reunite with friends and family to celebrate a festive occasion plus, there’s not much to cook!
