While going about our fast-paced day-to-day lives, we often forget to stop and smell the roses. Especially for us Malaysians, there are so many things we do on a daily basis that people in other parts of the world don’t actually get to experience. In fact, some of these “experiences” that we often take for granted have actually brought our cultures closer together!

Really one! I’m willing to bet 9/10 of you reading this would’ve probably done most of the things listed below that you never realised play an important role in bringing our cultures together:

1. Eating in Kopitiams or Mamaks

Of course, our first point has to do with eating. 😉

It’s every Malaysian’s favourite pastime and it’s one of the best ways we bond! And without us even realising it sometimes, when we eat at places like kopitiams or mamaks, we’re getting to know each others’ cultures better, all through food and meaningful conversations!

2. Sharing our bottle of Minyak Cap Kapak because everyone uses it

After all, sharing is caring.

In fact, you’ve probably borrowed this minyak from a friend once before, or vice versa. Either way, it’s something we all use and – in a strange way – it has kinda brought us closer together. <3

3. Attending Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali open houses

Let’s not forget the fun of donning traditional outfits from different cultures!

4. Playing traditional games like Congkak, Gasing or Batu Seremban together

Those were the days~

Growing up in Sekolah Kebangsaan, these were some of the most common games we would play and without even realising it, it has actually taught us a thing or two about one another’s cultures.

5. Late night visits to the pasar malam

Regardless of which state we come from, if there’s one place we’ve all visited before, it’s the “pasar malam”. Everyone loves the pasar malam mainly because you can get almost anything from there – from nasi lemak and char kuey teow, to kuih-muih and even gadgets! It’s also the one place for all Malaysians, regardless of background, to jalan-jalan, cari makan!

6. Being part of a Kebangsaan School

This is where our teachers and classmates were all from different cultures and backgrounds! Plus, this was also probably one of the first few places we really learnt about each other’s cultures and actually celebrated it together.

7. Watching or reading our Malaysian-birthed cartoons/comic books

Who can forget the lovable Kampung Boy ‘Lat’? It was one cartoon/comic book all Malaysians loved and it taught us a great deal about our Malaysian culture too. Honestly, we couldn’t stop turning those pages!

8. Bonding over Malaysians’ favourite drinks, like Kopi C

Malaysians love this hearty beverage. It’s the perfect mix of bitter coffee and sweet evaporated milk! And whether you’re a retiree or millennial, this is the one drink everyone can agree on and order anywhere – from kopitiams, to mamaks, and even fancy restaurants.

Well, if you love this Malaysian beverage as much as we do, then you’re gonna love this brand new treat by Cadbury even more!

And in case you didn’t know, Cadbury – despite being of British origin – has been part and parcel of our everyday lives for decades now. Ever since I was a kid wei! This brand of chocolate hasn’t just connected Malaysians to the British culture but it’s even brought us Malaysians closer together!

That’s why, in view of Merdeka, Cadbury is releasing a brand new flavour, and it’s inspired by our very own Kopi C beverage! Yaaas! Say hello to the all-new Cadbury Dairy Milk Kopi C flavour!
