Banks are often acknowledged as the safest place to keep your money but with the scam cases rampaging recently, one might wonder if is there any safe haven left for our money.

Just recently, a Malaysian took to his Twitter account to share a terrifying incident involving his mother’s money. His mother has a saving account with a local bank, and the account is NOT linked to any e-wallet or any online banking. This means the TAC password has never been a necessity. Regardless and unfortunately, his mother found out that her ENTIRE savings disappeared into thin air.

“This shows that saving our money in the bank today is no longer safe,” the man said.

His mother is not the only victim who lost her savings. 2 weeks ago, his colleague lost a whopping RM18,000 from his savings account, and the scammers were “merciful” enough to leave him a balance of RM9.

In his mother’s case, the man revealed in another tweet that the branch manager of the bank discussed the matter and they went through her bank statement thoroughly.

“There were a number of unknown transactions related to the TnG e-wallet and Shopee. Completely unknown.”

Together, his mother and the branch manager carefully walked through the bank statement and the latter patiently explained it to his mother.

Initially, his mother wanted to lodge a police report but eventually, she decided not to.

“She told me that she decided not to endure this hassle further. I guess due to her age, she can’t endure the hassle should things go further. She wants to just move on.”

The bank respected her decision and the investigation immediately stopped, despite the incident did take place.

However, the man had a message for the people out there, as well as the banks in Malaysia.

“Please be careful with your money, and to all the banks out there, please step up your security game further and this is your responsibility to do so.”

The man said that losing money to strangers is not our fault and it is not acceptable at all. He also thanked the bank for going through the hassle to help his mother previously.

Hopefully, this post will serve as a reminder to the people out there, as well as to the banks to be more alert with their security protocols.
