The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) handles 53 tons of food waste PER DAY, involving 92 Ramadhan bazaars in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.
According to a report by Kosmo, the Development and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said it involved 87 bazaars in Kuala Lumpur and 5 bazaars in Putrajaya.
“From the observation of data made in all 92 Ramadhan bazaars for a week, it was found that the amount of food waste thrown away by Ramadhan bazaar traders is on average 53 tons per day.”
“A study conducted on Ramadhan bazaar traders in Precinct 3, Putrajaya, also found that only 16% of the traders in the bazaar were able to complete their sales. For traders who could not finish their sales, 81% of them donated the food and only 3% of the leftover food was thrown into the bins provided,” he said.
This donation of unsold food will help prevent waste and reduce food waste from being sent to landfills.
Additionally, SWCorp also handles food waste from 5,260 businesses in Kuala Lumpur and 434 businesses in Putrajaya.
“While the average waste per business unit per day is 9.5kgs per day in Kuala Lumpur and 7.3kgs per day in Putrajaya.”
“The largest waste composition in Malaysia is food waste which is as much as 44.5% and that number is something to worry about during the month of Ramadhan,” he explained.
We genuinely hope that more businesses will considering exemplifying the Ramadhan bazaar traders who donate their leftover food to help further prevent food waste.
