The parents of a murder suspect who allegedly raped and killed a Malaysian student in Taiwan last week expressed their hope for a rapid trial on Tuesday (3 November) to repay justice for the deceased’s family by offering the life of their son in exchange.
The 24-year-old Malaysian victim who was known by her surname, Chung, attended Chang Jung Christian University in Taiwan. She went missing on Wednesday (28 October) before her body was found gruesomely murdered, as reported by Focus Taiwan.
A 28-year-old suspect who goes by the surname, Liang, was arrested by Tainan police authorities and confessed to sexually assaulting the victim before strangling her with a rope and dumping her body in Kaohsiung. He also admitted to stealing her credit card and mobile phone.
While the alleged killer’s parents initially offered to meet with Chung’s parents to offer an apology for their son’s actions, the deceased’s family refused to meet with them in person despite being in Taiwan to grieve their daughter, as said by a source from Taiwan News.

Liang’s parents released a formal statement through their borough chief on Tuesday to express their wish for a swift trial so that their son can rightfully pay for his crimes by giving “a life for a life,” as stated in a report by Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA). “To the father and mother of the student, we are the parents of Liang who caused such great harm to you. The regret is ours,” said the alleged criminal’s guardians.
“A life for a life will be the best answer for you. We are truly sorry that our mistakes in his education and upbringing caused such a big problem in society,” they added.
Previously, the Taiwan President, Tsai Ing-Wen apologised to the family of the victim and to the people of Malaysia as a whole. She asserted that the incident has seriously tarnished the country’s image and that the problems in Taiwan’s society must be thoroughly reviewed so that such a tragedy would not happen again.
