After serving loyal patrons for more than 100 years, the iconic Coliseum Cafe in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman finally closes down for good.

Famous for its Hainanese western-style food served since 1921, the closure was down to the fact that tenancy of the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman branch in a pre-war building next to the Coliseum Cinema has expired.

With its 100th anniversary celebration plans now no longer in contention, patrons to the legendary eatery will need to go to other branches to enjoy Coliseum Cafe’s tasty dishes.

Coliseum Cafe’s Marketing Manager Azrain Azman said, “Yes, it’s closed for good. We are saddened that we couldn’t celebrate our 100th anniversary.”

Established in 1921, the Coliseum Cafe and Grill Room is one of the franchise’s oldest establishment in the country, championing decorative memorabilia’s that essentially creates a nostalgic feeling.

Weathering through British colonial rule, Japanese occupation, Malaya’s independence, the formation of Malaysia and Y2K, it is kind of sad to see a legend bowing out.

Yet another business succumbing to the pandemic, let’s hope that revival efforts to keep the restaurant alive will be underway once businesses return to normal soon.
