Due to the recent incident involving a large fallen tree damaging multiple cars on a road in KL, DBKL is taking safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
New Straits Times reported that DBKL is ramping up efforts and has identified 28 trees as “high-risk,” that is set to be chopped down soon.

The safety measures are being implemented following an incident on Tuesday when a massive tree fell on Jalan Sultan Ismail, resulting in the death of a man.
It was mentioned that 175 trees, most of which are over 50 years old, have been identified as high-risk. Out of these, 147 trees have already been cut down.
DBKL noted that their certified arborists have been inspecting trees in KL since 2019, specifically those over 30 years old or with a circumference exceeding 1.5 meters.

DBKL is preparing new guidelines on high-risk and aged trees
The trees that were deemed high-risk underwent resistograph, picus tomography, and visual assessments to identify damage, lean, and cracks.
DBKL mentioned that this follows its tree management plan from 2019, which includes a 3-tiered risk assessment to keep the public safe.
DBKL is looking to improve the plan and working on fresh guidelines for dealing with high-risk and old trees. They’re aiming to have it completed by July 2024.
