Air Asia is starting to impose a counter check-in fee of RM20-RM30 as an effort to encourage passengers to go contactless instead.

As of yesterday (1 September), customers who utilise the airline’s check-in counters will be charged RM20 per person for domestic flights and RM30 per person for international flights. However, passengers can avoid these charges by digitally checking in via the airline’s contactless kiosks, or on AirAsia’s website and mobile app, as specified on AirAsia’s website.

The airline said that it wanted to minimise physical contact between staff and passengers, “to promote and enhance operational efficiency and guest convenience.”

However, a waiver will be placed on counter check-in fees for the following exceptions:

  • Passengers with reduced mobility
  • Premium Flex or Premium Flatbed guests
  • Guests affected by flight disruptions
  • Airport Kiosk outage
  • Guests travelling with an infant (under 24 months of age)
  • Young guests travelling alone (YPTA)
  • BIG Platinum and BIG Black Members
  • Red Carpet guests
  • Guests on travel warrant and government bookings
  • Sky Marshals on duty

The fee is charged on a per guest and per check-in basis and can be paid via cash or credit card at the airport. Those who wish to pre-book a counter check-in can do so online using the “My Booking” feature on AirAsia’s website and mobile app.

As of now, only guests who check-in using the airport counters in the following locations will be charged the fee that is RM20-RM30 equivalent in their local currency:

  • Malaysia
  • Vietnam
  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Taipei
  • Kaohsiung
  • Honolulu
