November is just a few days away, and aside from the long-awaited General Election, there’s a circumstance that many Malaysians may not be able to avoid – the monsoon season which will lead to a flood.

We’ve learned that from the past year, even city places are now prone to flood. Some of the residents in the flood-prone areas have started to prep for the upcoming disaster to avoid more losses. As for the rescuers themselves, the firefighters have canceled or “frozen” their annual leaves to cope with the possible disaster and make necessary preparations for the next GE as well.

The Director-General of the Fire Rescue Department said that the Bureau will freeze all leaves for firefighters from November 4 to 30, with exceptions given to medical, religious, and emergency purposes.

As for December to January 15, 2023, only 20% of the firefighters are allowed to take leave.

The DG also said that to cope better with the flood season, fire & rescue units in 11 states in Malaysia, as well as 19 response teams have been set up. In total, 253 firefighters, 51 lifeboats, 41 fire utility vehicles, and 33 lorries will be deployed at specific locations.

Sin Chew reported that the Northeast monsoon is expected to start mid-November this year to March 2023. From November to January next year, it is expected that there will be 4 to 6 heavy rains that may cause flooding.

“Continuous heavy rainfall is expected in Kelantan, Pahang & Terengganu from November to December, while Johor, Sabah & Sarawak are expected to experience continuous heavy rainfall from December to February next year,” the DG said.

Regardless, we hope that everyone is prepared for the annual disaster and that no life losses will be reported. As for the upcoming GE, remember to fulfill your duties to vote and abide by the rules of the voting center.
