If you’ve always wanted to become a firefighter or as they say in Malaysia, a Kakak or Abang Bomba, then now’s the perfect chance to apply as there are about 600 vacancies in the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). The department’s director-general, Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid announced the matter recently, saying that the vacancies are mainly for the KB19 Grade.
According to Bernama, the vacant posts will be filled up gradually to strengthen the 14,500 JBPM personnel currently deployed throughout Malaysia. Mohammad Hamdan asserted,
“Last year, we recruited about 1,000 new personnel to fill vacancies in the existing and new fire stations. To fill the current vacancy, recruitment will be done in stages,”

Moreover, on 1 February 2023, the Eastern Region Malaysian Fire and Rescue Academy will take in about 130 new trainees to undergo training and the Fire Science Certificate course. It is hoped that this will help fill the existing Grade KB-19 vacancy.
The JBPM director-general also revealed that a project to develop training facilities at the Eastern Region Malaysian Fire and Rescue Academy, which includes the construction of a water and highway rescue training complex, is expected to be completed in 2024. The project has been approved by the government under the 12th Malaysian Plan with an allocation of RM46 million. When completed, it will be one of the centres for training rescuers conducting search and rescue operations in situations involving swift water flow, floods, and so on.
