Most animal shelters welcome any help that they can get to ensure their sustenance and the well-being of the animals that are under their care.
With or without the Movement Control Order (MCO), animal shelter on a daily basis operate on funds and donations that they receive from the public which go to vet fees, food stocks, utility bills and more.
There are plenty of animal shelters and associations that would be happy to receive aid in these trialing times. If you would like to help them out, we’ve compiled a list of organisations that you could consider supporting.
1. Malaysian Animal Association
Malaysian Animal Association (MAA) encompasses a group of animal lovers committed to promoting awareness and education of animal welfare. They work with local communities and share the aim of ensuring animals are free from cruelty.
MAA is dependent on public donations to carry out their programmes such as feeding stray animals and assisting other animal shelters.
MAA launched an initiative known as “Stray Animal Food Program” where they help feed stray dogs and cats. Funds will be channeled into this program and also other purposes such as medical aids and awareness programmes.

2. Paws Animal Welfare Society
PAWS (PAWS Animal Welfare Society) is a non-profit animal shelter in Petaling Jaya that has been in operation since 1987. They receive the surrender of unwanted dogs and cats which they will vaccinate, deworm, neuter or spay, and put up for adoption.
According to their website, the shelter and all costs involved in running it are entirely funded by the generous donations of the public as well as proceeds from charitable events.

Paws also welcomes donation in kind where people can contribute daily necessities for the shelter animals such as canned or dry pet food and cat litter. They also need items such as pest preventives and dog cages.

3. SPCA Selangor
SPCA Selangor is an animal welfare organisation based in Ampang Jaya, Selangor. They are an all-rounded organisation because they provide an adoption program, investigation of cruelty reports, humane education, assistance to community animal caregivers and they also run a dedicated, low-cost spay and neuter clinic.
They depend solely on the generosity of the public and sponsors to continue their services and activities.
Apart from cash donations, SPCA Selangor also have a wish list consisting of animal necessities such as canned or dry pet food, water bowls and many more.

4. Malaysian Animal Welfare Association
Malaysian Animal Welfare Association (MAWA) is a non-profit organisation that strives to prevent animal cruelty and reduce the numbers of strays in Malaysia while also protecting animals rights.
They’ve been around since 2016 and they aim to move towards zero stray nation. Your contributions help them to neuter, protect, feed and rehome the strays.
Prior to the MCO, MAWA organised special events such as adoption programs or demonstrations and animal fostering. Your donation is vital to help feed the shelter animals, strays and aid their vet bills.

5. SPCA Penang
SPCA Penang has been operating since 1948 and it is a non-profit community-based organisation whose primary role is to protect and care for animals.
Through SPCA Penang, you can donate or sponsor a shelter spot, and they’re a registered charity so you may qualify for tax exemption.
Even during MCO, they still would appreciate help from the public towards their organisation.

Apart from depending on public donations, SPCA Penang also sells merchandise such as cute reusable bags and key chains to raise funds to cover the daily expenditure.
