On Mother’s Day (May 11, 2025), Malaysians were heartbroken by the sight of an elephant grieving its baby after a highway accident with a lorry in Perak.
Since then, many have called for the government to take precautions to prevent accidents with animals on Malaysian highways, which are growing rampant.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, a husband and wife duo narrowly escaped death after their vehicle hit an elephant on Jalan Johor Bahru – Mersing on Tuesday (May 13) night.
The Kota Tinggi District Police Chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman, shared that the incident took place at about 9:20pm when the couple was travelling from Kota Tinggi to Mersing.
“Upon arriving at the location, four elephants suddenly crossed the road, causing the driver to fail to avoid them and crash into one of the animals. As a result of the crash, the front of their Perodua Alza was damaged, but the victims, aged 40 and 38, were not injured,” he said.

The elephants, on the other hand, fled back into the nearby forest area immediately after the accident. The condition of the elephant that was hit is still unknown.
Be careful when driving near forests, especially at night!
“The police are advising road users to be more vigilant, especially when passing near forests at night,” Superintendent Yusof Othman added.
