Just yesterday, a traffic police officer had gone viral for asking a foreign couple for a bribe when he had stopped them for speeding during their van tour across Malaysia. He had told the couple that they could pay him RM100 instead of paying an RM300 fine at a police station, to which the couple had complied to the officer.

Now, another case has surfaced, where a traffic police officer in Langkawi had told a foreign tourist to pay him instead of paying a fine at a police station during a traffic stop.

The tourist, Luke Damant, took to his YouTube channel to share the incident in his vlog during his trip to Langkawi. This incident took place in November 2023.

He wrote, “Welcome to Langkawi, one of Malaysia’s most popular and beautiful islands! Today, I’m on a journey to explore the island and see what it has to offer. I rented a motorcycle for RM30 per day at a local rental shop which will help is get around town.”

“From famous foods, locations and even an encounter with the Malaysian police, Langkawi has it all! Join me on this journey.”

In the video, Luke could be seen documenting himself and his friend while on their motorcycle when they were stopped by a traffic police officer. While Luke turned the camera away, the audio caught his conversation with the traffic officer.

“Alright, we got pulled over,” Luke said.

When the officer asked him where he was from, he promptly responded that he is Australian.

The officer then asked if he had a license to ride the bike, to which Luke affirmed. He also asked if Luke knew what his mistake was (to get pulled over), and he once again affirmed.

bribe 3

The officer told Luke he wasn’t wearing a helmet and said that he would be fined RM300.

Luke asked the officer if he would receive a ticket to be paid later, and the officer that he would have to follow him back to a police station about 10km away to pay the fine as they fear tourists would leave the country without paying the fine should they allow them to pay it later.

“If you are local, you have time to pay it for a month. But if you’re a foreigner, if you go back, you won’t pay the fine. The procedure is that we will bring you to the police station and you must pay at the police station. At the police station, you can get a receipt,” he told Luke.

The officer then gave Luke the choice to follow him to the police station or to settle it there and then, with a ‘discount’.

When they agreed with an amount of RM100, Luke was asked to follow the officer into an alley to make the transaction.

After the incident, Luke explained that he was surprised to have ‘gotten away’ with not paying a fine and headed to a shop to purchase a cheap helmet to prevent anymore incidents.
