Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) is questioning the disruption of the Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which occurred just days after the new system was officially launched.
In its statement, its president, Jais Abdul Karim, described the incident as suspicious, given that the project involved a significant investment of RM742 million, including RM456 million specifically for the new Aerotrain system.
More shockingly, he said, the disruption was caused by flooding in the tunnel, which halted operations and left passengers stranded for nearly 90 minutes.
“MCW welcomes the initiative to upgrade KLIA, but every cent of public funds must translate into consistent and reliable service, not an early failure that undermines public confidence.”
In response, MCW urged the Ministry of Transport and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to provide an open explanation regarding the actual cause of the disruption, as well as immediate and long-term measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The NGO also called for a transparent and independent post-implementation audit of the Aerotrain system and the overall drainage planning at KLIA.
