Through this Covid-19 pandemic, most of us are more aware of our hygiene levels and we’re sure that most Malaysians have at least one bottle of hand sanitiser at an arm’s reach. But have you ever wondered how hospital rooms or large public places are disinfected to protect us?

In some cases, fogging machines are used but at locations such as the airports, robots are deployed to minimise the chances of transmission risk to humans.

One such robot is the UVD Robot by Danish company, Blue Ocean Robotics.

The UVD Robot is an autonomous robot which uses ultraviolet light (UV-C) to disinfect high-risk areas by killing 99.99 per cent of pathogens. It is clinically tested and verified by an accredited lab in Denmark & UK.

The self-driving robots are safe, reliable and eliminate human error which makes them ideal for disinfecting areas with a high risk of virus infections such as medical facilities, public transportation (stations & workshops) and even premises of worship. The best thing about it is that it can be controlled with just a tablet!

UVD Robots use ultraviolet light to effectively kill pathogens in confined spaces, limiting the spread of COVID-19 without exposing healthcare workers to the risk of infection.

Here’s how it looks like in action:

Last month, this innovation was selected by Frost & Sullivan, an international consulting organisation, for its Best Practice ‘2020 European Professional Service Robots Product Leadership’ Award.

This robot has already been used in more than 50 countries in Europe and Asia. In regards to Malaysia, the robot has been brought in by Alfallah Cleantech. The COO of the company, Danny Liu says,

“UVD Robot is the only UV disinfection system co-developed by a government and hospitals since the beginning. Its efficacy has been tested by independent laboratories, various hospitals and other similar facilities. We are excited to have it in Malaysia!”

The robots have already been brought to KLIA and Genting Highlands for a demo to showcase their capabilities. We’ll definitely be seeing more from these robots soon! So the next time you come upon one of these robots, know that they are hard at work to make sure that all of us are in safe hands!
