There are many reasons why tourists flock to Thailand, from their gorgeous temples to the recreational activities (ahem ahem). But one of the main aspects is definitely the mouthwatering, authentic Thai food!
However, it appears that the country is about to lose a tourist-favourite, mother-of-all-meals food stop in Bangkok.
Khaosod English recently shared the saddening news that the famous Michelin-starred street food vendor, 81-year-old Jay Fai, is planning on retiring and closing up shop in 2025, much to the dismay of the Thai authorities.
Jay Fai, who is famously known for her mindblowing ‘crab omelette’, plans to retire and close her restaurant in 2025 due to her old age, causing fatigue and challenges in maintaining Michelin-starred standards. The rising costs of quality ingredients have also posed an issue in her operations.
Her daughter will also not be taking over the business.
Among those who expressed their sadness over Jay Fai’s potential closure is Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who has apparently never had the chance to patronise the world-famous eatery. However, she hopes that her friends will take her to queue up and eat at the restaurant before it closes.
Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thapanee Kiatphaibool, also shared that Jay Fai’s retirement serves as a big blow to Bangkok street food culture as her eatery has long been a soft power in promoting tourism and Thai cuisine, thanks to her foods international recognition.
