So it’s official, guys!
Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus has just been appointed as Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) new governor, according to Bloomberg.
She had previously worked as BNM’s deputy governor 23 years after joining the central bank in 1987. During her time in BNM, she was involved in overseeing and ensuring the health of the banking sector, which is the core responsibility of the central bank in ensuring financial stability in the system.

On top of that, she also spearheaded investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal before she left in 2016. According to The Star, UOB Kay Hian Securities mentioned in its report that Nor Shamsiah was an ideal candidate, saying,
“Prior to leaving Bank Negara, she was the deputy governor from 2010 to 2016 and was even considered as one of the potential candidates to replace Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz as the governor back in 2016, given her level of experience and seniority within Bank Negara.”

Earlier this month on 6th June, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed at a press conference that Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim resigned from his position as BNM governor. Not long after that, two candidates were already being considered for the role of BNM governor – Nor Shamsiah and former deputy governor Dr Sukhdave Singh.
Congratulations to Nor Shamsiah for becoming BNM’s new governor! Let’s hope she does a great job in her new role at the central bank!
