Don’t trust people online so easily.
Recently, a trans teen in Johor was robbed when she went out with a man that she had met on MiChat. The incident happened at around 5pm on 10 August 2020 at Kampung Gambut, Punggai, Pengerang.
The Kota Tinggi Police Chief said that the 17-year-old teen got to know of a 30-year-old Bangladeshi man through the MiChat application. The duo then decided to meet in real life at a supermarket in Bandar Penawar where the teen accompanied the man to get some household supplies.
However, she was then robbed at the side of the road around Kampung Gambut, reported Harian Metro. In that incident, the teen lost all her cash and her mobile phone. Other than that, she also sustained injuries on both her hands from getting hit by the suspect.
Many accounts on social media have fabricated a story of the teen being kidnapped and raped but the police have denied all of them.
Investigations are being made on this case under Section 394 of the Penal Code. The police are now searching for the suspect and people are encouraged to contact Inspector Mohd Shukor Ismail (011-10823779) if they have any information regarding the case.
Remember to always be careful when meeting someone new, especially someone that you have met on online applications. If you still want to meet them, then make sure to do so in crowded places and make sure that you and your food/drinks are not alone with them at any point in time. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
