Bring the Stadium Home! 5 Tips For M’sians to Host a Football Watch Party at Their House!

Football season is finally here! With football festivities back in vogue, what better way to celebrate than watching live matches with other football fanatics?

That being said, watching football matches at mamak restaurants can be quite a hassle. Finding a nearby parking spot is pretty much impossible, plus you’ll have to berebut with other restaurant-goers for tables and seats. So, here’s our solution for you and your fellow sports fans: a football watch party at home! Don’t know how to host one? Then here’s a quick little guideline on how to organise the most happening football watch party in your own crib!

1. Keep valuables and fragile objects away from the viewing space

Let’s settle the boring part first; before the whistles are blown and all the fun starts, keep all fragile and valuable objects far away from the action to prevent any property or bodily damage! Even if you believe in your ability to control your own excitement, that doesn’t mean your gung-ho guests can control theirs. So in that vein, lock away as many valuables as possible. Remember: football season is temporary, but losing a family heirloom to irreparable damage is forever!

2. Set up football-themed decorations and props to get the spirit going

What’s a football watch party without decorations to emphasise the spirit of football, kan? Your football buddies will appreciate the effort you put into decorating your space! Or if you’d rather not put too much thought into decorations, do something as simple as using disposable plates and cutleries which are in the competing teams’ colours! Plus, going DIY with the props is a great way to get the family involved and keep the excitement going.

3. Get your “team” to mind the neighbours

Remember: not all Malaysians share the same passion for football as you. So don’t neglect your good old budi bahasa toward your neighbours and try to keep all the noise from your house within tolerable levels. Those seemingly short 90 minutes during the match are a valuable time for other Malaysians to catch up on sleep! And make sure to keep reminding your guests to tone down on the excitement, too. They’ll be sure to understand because we’re all Team Malaysia first, betul tak?

4. Plan a pre-match game to warm things up

Before the match starts, how about kicking off the night with your own games to play to keep the momentum going? You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to what pre-match game you can plan to spice things up for the party! It can be something simple such as a trivia challenge involving Malaysian or international football leagues, a match on a mini foosball table (which you can find for cheap online!) or if you have the gaming setup, you can virtually play a football match of your own on your gaming console! The possibilities are endless!

5. Serve an ample amount of food and drinks

If there’s one thing Malaysian football fans love more than football, it’s definitely food! So don’t let your team players watch the game on an empty stomach and ensure that there are adequate refreshments for everyone! Prepare Malaysian food favourites such as satay, rojak, keropok lekor and the like. And don’t forget to set up a concession stand for drinks and kuih-muih too! Too lazy to prepare food for everyone? Then ask your football buddies to bring their own dishes and have a potluck of everyone’s favourite food!
