The grave of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir is set to be exhumed urgently to allow a post-mortem examination that could determine the true cause of the 13-year-old’s death.
This request was made by lawyers representing the victim’s mother, Noraidah Lamat, namely Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, via a press statement.
According to the statement, the decision follows new findings of bruises observed on Zara’s body during the washing of her remains at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17.
“Our client personally saw the bruises while she was helping wash Zara’s body with several other women,” the lawyers said.
“She did not include this crucial detail in her earlier police reports because she had completely forgotten about it.”
Noraidah only recalled the bruises after being questioned by her legal team about Zara’s physical condition two days ago.
“Our client believes the bruises were caused by blunt force trauma to Zara’s back before she was found beneath her school dormitory building at dawn on July 16,” they shared.
The lawyers argue that this new development justifies reopening the investigation, despite Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stating that police had completed their probe and would submit the investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers by next week.
Additionally, the lawyers referenced a police report filed by Noraidah on July 30, which included a recording of a phone conversation between her and Zara prior to the incident. In the recording, Zara reportedly complained of bullying and threats from senior students, including one who said, “If I touch you, you’ll bleed.”
“This information may be linked to the new details our client shared with police this morning,” the statement added.
