The Year of the Dog is upon us! As many Malaysians from all over are busy preparing for the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities, for some of us, it can get very nostalgic as we reminisce what it was like celebrating Chinese New Year as kids. Well, if you’re feeling the nostalgia too, take a trip down memory lane with some of these ways we used to celebrate Chinese New Year and how much it has changed since then!

1. Receiving angpao from our relatives

And if you’re not married yet, you have to deal with all the looks from your relatives who still have to give you angpao!

2. Playing with fireworks

Admit it, some of us still play with sparklers until now! Nice to take picture okay?! Don’t judge!

3. Drinking during Chinese New Year

Nothing beats that awesome feeling when you’ve levelled up and graduated from sparkling wine and shandy to real and proper alcohol. Plus, you get to rub it in your younger cousins’ faces 😛

4. Chinese New Year clothes

Nowadays, the culture of wearing traditional clothes has died down a little (for some of us at least!). Elders aren’t as fussy about what we wear compared to last time, so long as it’s still in the traditional palette of red and bright colours. Malaysia also become hotter okay? How to tahan wearing traditional clothes in this weather?!

5. Reunion dinners

As our parents and grandparents get older, eating out is more out of convenience than anything else. Nothing beats Ah Ma’s cooking though!

6. The reunion dinner seating arrangement

7. Visiting relatives

Gone are the days when we would actually visit our relatives from house to house. Nowadays, sending a simple WhatsApp greeting will do. We also get less angpao like that Y_Y

8. When it’s time to lou the yee sang

Especially if you’re now the tallest in your family!

9. Travelling during the CNY season
