Cancer Survivors Malaysia (CSM), a non-profit organisation, made a police report after claiming they got scammed by a university student who supposedly needed cash to cover his tuition fees.
Berita Harian reported that Zuraini Kamal, the chairperson of CSM, said the student who identified himself as Lim reached out to her for help raising RM5,000 for his studies.

“He said that his family couldn’t afford to pay his tuition fees”
Zuraini shared that Lim, who is in his 20s, explained that his family couldn’t afford the fees and that he risked being expelled from the university if he didn’t pay.
Feeling sorry for him, she took to her Facebook to share his bank account number and asked her friends to pitch in and help him, worried that he might not be able to continue his studies.

Lim was involved in online gambling
A few hours after sharing the post on social media, Lim told Zuraini that he had received RM1,176, which led her to reach out to the NGO from Penang for further assistance.
During the interview with Berita Harian, Zuraini explained that the NGO representative informed her they had previously helped this Lim student, raising over RM30,000, but the student had not paid his fees and was actually involved in online gambling.
She then got in touch with the student again, but he denied everything and threatened to do something to himself.
“I asked the student to return the funds collected through my account so they could be refunded to the donors, who are also members of CSM,” she explained.

Lim and his dad called to apologise
Zuraini went on to say that the student and his dad called her over 30 times to apologise and ask her to delete the post she made on Facebook.
“I also contacted the university involved, and they confirmed that the student is still studying there and is aware of his actions in seeking funds through deception.”
Concerned that the student would continue to deceive others, she filed a police report at the Kubang Pasu District Police Headquarters (IPD) to prevent other NGOs from falling victim to his schemes.
She also mentioned that the student had previously used the same tactics to gain sympathy by claiming that his father is disabled (OKU) and that his mother only works at the market.
