A private school in China stole the spotlight when it was reported to be giving cash rewards amounting to hundreds of thousands of Chinese Yuan (CNY) to students who successfully furthered their studies at the university.

Dajiang International School in Guigang, Guangxi, held a Graduation Day on August 12 to celebrate the Class of 2025 students who successfully graduated. Students who were successfully accepted into prestigious universities in the country had a handsome reward, which was an amount of cash given that was determined based on the rankings of the universities involved.

One of the female students, named Luo, emerged as the recipient of the top prize of CNY1 million or ~RM591,000 after successfully continuing her studies at Tsinghua University.

In viral videos and photos, banknotes can be seen stacked on benches and placed on the stage.

Luo was not the only student who received the cash prizes, as other students who made it into other prestigious universities also got similar prizes, but in lower amounts, according to a Chinese media outlet.

Those who successfully enter Zhejiang University and the University of Hong Kong received CNY150,000 (~RM88,200). Another student who successfully enrolled in Huazhong Agricultural University received CNY10,000 (~RM5,880).

According to the South China Morning Post, Peking University and Tsinghua University are ranked 14th and 17th, respectively, in the QS World University Rankings 2026.

Both are considered the top institutions in China among mainland public universities. Schools across China evaluate the number of graduates successfully admitted to these two institutions as a benchmark to measure a school’s ability to produce high-performing students.

Do you think schools in Malaysia should follow suit?
