Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, has been summoned by the country’s cyberspace regulator after failing to properly manage its content.

The move came after the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) warned the platform for repeatedly pushing celebrity gossip and trivial topics onto its trending list, which they said was harmful to the online space.

CAC launches campaign to improve online safety for youth

The CAC later ordered the platform to make corrections within a set timeframe and said that all those involved would be held accountable before issuing a summons.

According to Global Times, the CAC stressed that a safe and positive online space benefits everyone.

They also mentioned that to better protect minors online and create a healthier cyberspace, a two-month nationwide campaign was launched in July to improve the online environment for young people.

Vulgar, money-obsessed, and similar content will be removed

The campaign targets harmful online content that could affect minors’ physical or mental health, with strict action against illegal material involving violence, superstition, pornography, self-harm, or violations of minors’ privacy.

“It will also remove vulgar, crude, money-obsessed, or show-off content, as well as extreme emotional posts, while taking tough measures against illegal activities targeting minors,” the CAC added.

Authorities also said they’ll keep cracking down on illegal and harmful online activity, step up internet law enforcement, and push websites and platforms to take responsibility in order to protect a clean and healthy cyberspace.
