Sometimes difficult times do bring the worst in people. Apart from death and suffering, the coronavirus outbreak has caused a spike in racism towards Chinese people globally.
In one incident in the Netherland, a 24-year old Dutch-Chinese lady was attacked while she was on her way home after she politely asked a group of youth to stop singing a racist song.
As reported by Nextshark, “Prevention is better than the Chinese” is a song played by DJ Lex Gaarthuis on Radio 10 and the title of the song is a play on words as “Chinese” and “cure” sound similar in Dutch.
Apart from the title, the lyrics also mention that if you don’t eat Chinese food, then you don’t have anything to worry about because prevention is better than Chinese. Well, you would ask someone to stop if the song is targeted towards you.
The group, however, attacked her and slashed her body with a knife because they want to remove the virus from inside her body. The lady, Cindy, explained that she is willing to speak to her attackers so that she can explain to them the ramifications of violence and racism.
Let’s not steep too low when it comes to dealing with the current outbreak. We should focus on how to prevent the spread by taking extra measures instead of resorting to violence. We are better than this.
