Last week, a Chinese National woman assaulted and injured an immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before she was found to have no entry records, alongside her husband and two children.

Following her arrest, she was brought to the Sepang Magistrate’s Court today (August 18), where she pleaded guilty to the charge of assaulting a public servant under Section 332 of the Penal Code. The charges were read out to her in Mandarin, to which she stated she understood.

The court sentenced the Chinese National woman to 1 month in jail and a fine of RM2,000.

According to the charge sheet, the 31-year-old defendant, Fang Fuyuan (transliteration), assaulted and injured a female immigration officer at the departure of KLIA on August 13, at around 8 PM. The dispute started when the officer told the Chinese National to make way for others while the officer conducted a check on her records.

“It was just a misunderstanding.”

In a report by Sin Chew, the defendant’s lawyer pleaded for leniency from the court, stating that the defendant’s husband and two children are foreign tourists and have no family support locally. Both her children are less than 5 years old.

The lawyer also stated that this was Fuyuan’s first offence and pointed out that the dispute was caused by a misunderstanding due to the language barrier between Fuyuan and the immigration officer.

The chief prosecutor, on the other hand, sought the court to make a fair judgment on the grounds of reminding the public and protecting civil servants from harm. The court then sentenced Fuyuan to the mentioned jail sentence and fine, and should she fail to pay the fine, her jail term will be increased to 2 months.

Fuyuan attempted to plead for more leniency, but was denied by the court.
