Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta has enforced a new initiative since 30 April 2025 to reduce its infamous traffic congestion and air pollution: Requiring all civil servants to take public transport every Wednesday.

Accordingly, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has issued a reminder to civil servants within the Jakarta Provincial Government about the policy, warning that non-compliance would mean they will be barred from getting a promotion.

Pramonon was quoted by the Indonesian portal Jakarta Globe as saying that a halt in promotion is among the sanctions that civil servants will face if they don’t take public transport every Wednesday as per the Governor’s Instruction No. 6 of 2025.

The Jakarta Governor asserted,

“For anyone who violates this policy while I’m in charge — for at least the next five years — don’t expect a promotion,”

The report further revealed that the Indonesian capital city recorded a high compliance rate of 96% on the first day of the policy’s implementation.

It’s quite substantial too, as public transport users in Jakarta, especially TransJakarta, saw an increase from 1.25 million to 1.4 million on the first Wednesday of May.

Pramono lauded the policy, stressing,

“We want this to become not just an order but a new lifestyle for civil servants. Public transportation is the future of Jakarta,”

So, what do you guys think of this initiative implemented by the Jakarta Governor? Should major cities in Malaysia follow suit?
