Come SPM season, schools all over Malaysia would conduct workshops to help student prepare for the subjects they would be tested on. But, what if a school decides to only give that opportunity low performing students?

Anne Louis took to her Twitter account to call out the management of a high performance school in Johor Bahru, for conducting a 2 days 1 night SPM workshop at a hotel after allegedly informing parents that it was only for Islamic studies.

Though, it was later revealed that other subjects such as Chemistry and Additional Mathematics were also taught.

She wrote, “#MalaysiaMadaniFail alert. So, this happened a few days which upset and outraged non-Muslim parents and students. The school held an overnight 2 days 1 night SPM examination preparation workshop for Muslim students only at a hotel, announcing it as ‘for Agama-subject’ students.”

“Turns out, it was a comprehensive workshop covering Chemistry, Add Math etc. Apparently paid for by a donor. Non-Muslim students were left out, not even informed of the workshop.”

The principal responds

Upon knowing about this, a parent took to their Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) WhatsApp chat group to bring up the matter and was then informed by the school principal that the workshop was only for 40 low performing students.

“This is a High Performance School that is the hope of PPD (District Education Office) Johor Bahru and the Johor State Department of Education. The achievement of Malay students is very worrying. A total of 40 students failed and did not qualify for the SPM Certificate if efforts were not made to help them,” the principal wrote.

The principal also informed that the workshop was funded using contributions from parents and individuals.

Backing up the principal, someone else added that during a PIBG meeting, parents were told to conduct prayers for their children based on their own beliefs for spiritual strength to face the upcoming SPM examinations.

One parent then asked whether there were non-Malay students who failed as well, but did not receive a response.

Anne has since shared with WORLD OF BUZZ that the school’s PIBG has forwarded queries in regards to the workshop to the school’s principal but have yet to receive a response.

WORLD OF BUZZ has also confirmed with the Education Ministry that Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has allowed the Johor State Department of Education to decide on whether or not to take action on this matter, based on how they see fit.

You can check out the full WhatsApp conversation between the school’s PIBG in Anne’s Twitter thread here.
